6 Simple Ways To Write Better Essays
By: Daniel Millions

Writing an essay for College is not as bad as it might first appear. If you have not had to produce one before than understandably you might be feeling the pressure, but if you follow some simple advice than the whole process will not be that bad. This article aims to offer that information. Read on to discover six great tips to help you to write a better essay.

It may sound obvious, but the very first thing that you need to think about when starting the essay is time management. Typically you will be given an essay deadline that will be at least 2 or 3 weeks away and consequentially it is very easy to make the mistake of relaxing too much about it. The time will disappear very quickly and so to avoid last minute panic you should construct a timetable that will see you complete the essay at least one week before the due date.

The next step is to properly understand the question. It is quite unbelievable how many students get low grades simply because they failed to read and understand the question. Instead they give an answer to the question that they would like to undertake. So crucially before you begin writing or researching, sit down and properly understand what is expected of you. If you are unsure, now is the time to approach the tutor for further clarity.

If you are unsure about how the essay should be written then it is a good idea to find essays that have been written on the subject already. Basically this gives you the opportunity to review the work in order to try to capture the style of writing and perhaps how the author structures the argument. Remember the aim is to find out what gets good grades and not to simple copy other people's work.

Once you have collected all of the relevant resources you are ready to begin writing the essay. Instead of worrying about writing each paragraph so that it is perfect, it is a good idea to simply write as much relevant stuff as you possible can at first. This method can help your productivity as you will find yourself writing much more quickly than if you were to ponder over every paragraph. After you have completed the first draft, you can then spend more time on corrections and removing anything that does not make sense to the reader.

This tip has already been touched upon, but time and time again students are guilty of plagiarism. If you include any words that are directly taken from anyone else's published work than you risk being caught plagiarizing. In any case this is simply not worth it. You are allowed to cite other people's work and if you do so you must use the correct referencing. What you must never do is try to pass off someone else's work as your own.

The final tip relates to the presentation of the essay. Most Colleges and Universities will provide their students with a handbook on what standards are expected for essays. Dependent on the subject area this may relate to just the grammar and style of the writing, but it may also extend to the inclusion of graphs and charts. The guidelines are simple to follow and so it is pointless to ignore the easy marks that they give you.
