An Ideal Job
By: Bryony Roe

Oh no, Monday again! You’ve got to go back to that awful place that feels like prison. You are overworked and under’appreciated. Everyone feels trapped at work from time to time. Before you make any drastic decisions, it makes sense to take a minute to analyze your current position and try to pin point the problem. This will give you an insight into what you should avoid in your next career move.

Consider what you love to do. Most people have a hobby or a passion for something that they would happily do for free. It’s a good idea to think about your strengths and weaknesses. It can be difficult trying to assess your personality alone, so asking a friend or colleague can be helpful. See if they can help to identify what you would be best at.

Imagine yourself doing exactly what you want and list the experience/training you are missing in order to do it. Once you know what qualifications your dream job requires, research courses or other ways to develop the necessary skills.

Try to identify a minimum salary that your new job would have to offer. Two other factors that should be taken into account before a move are the amount of hours you would be willing to work and location.

Once you are sure that leaving is your only option, ensure that your CV is up-to-date. Throw yourself into job hunting. Many people are under the misconception that if you send a few CVs out, employers will come to you. When applying for a job you’ve seen advertised, send a CV and covering letter. If you don’t hear anything from the company, call and ask – the employer will prefer candidates that take a bigger interest. You have to be as pro-active as possible.

When you consider the short amount of precious time we have on Earth, you will understand just how important enjoying your job really is. Counting down the hours until home time is no way to spend your time at work.
