Beat the Heat at Your Next Summer Party
By: Christine Harrell

Summer is a great time for entertaining. The long, warm days are perfect for getting a bunch of friends together to have fun. The problem is some days aren't just warm; they are oppressively hot. You want your guests to enjoy themselves, not to sit panting in the sun too exhausted to move.

When organizing a summer party, be sure to take the temperature into account during the planning stage. Your reward will be grateful guests and a successful event.

Cold Drinks and Cool Shade:

An essential ingredient to beat the heat is to have plenty of drinks on ice to let your guests cool down. Don't just have beer and soda in the ice chest. Add bottles of water as well. Nothing quenches thirst like good old water and yet few parties even offer it as an option.

Arranging tables and activities in the shaded areas makes a dramatic difference in the comfort level of your guests. Direct sunlight is hot even on an otherwise temperate day. Not every yard has plenty of natural shade and some need a little help. A smart plan is to rent tables with umbrellas, canopies, or even a whole party tent to give your guests respite from the scorching sunlight.

Patio Misters Give Your Party a Tropical Air:

Once it gets hot enough, even shade doesn't make the outdoors comfortable. You could move inside but most people want outdoor parties in the summer. Patio misters use the cooling power of evaporation to significantly drop the temperature. They spray a refreshing mist that makes the air quite pleasant.

The big problem with misters is they often don't perform as advertised. The quoted temperature drops of 20-30 degrees are ideal figures reached only if you live in a very dry environment. The more humid it is the less effective misters are. However they should cool the air at least a little and keep you from having to move the party indoors.

Spot Coolers Are Ideal for Indoor Parties:

Another great way to enjoy the outdoors with the comfort of the indoors is to rent an walled tent. The problem is not only is it a hot day, but once you start packing people inside it's going to get a lot hotter fast. You could nudge the thermostat down a few degrees and cool the whole house, but a better choice might be spot coolers.

These portable air conditioning units are designed for business server rooms but are also used quite often at events like parties. Spot coolers allow you cool off one room without having to cool off the whole house. The warm air is vented outside so it's easy to create a comfortable environment for your guests.

Shade, misters, and spot coolers are all different ways you can use to keep your party guests cool. The ideal choice for you depends on the size of your event and the temperatures you are dealing with.
