Business Process Improvement - What Is It Really About?
By: Robert Pierre

What is important to business owners is the bottom line - profitability. They make sure that they obtain this by concentrating on satisfying their customers and by achieving end business objectives.

To achieve these goals seamlessly, businesses use processes to ensure that the organization produces quality products and services within a certain level of productivity. The better and more effective the processes used, the more chances that the business will achieve its end business goals. However, the organization should also be ready to adjust to the changing business environment. That is why it is important for an organization to have good business improvement strategies.

Is Business Process Improvement for existing processes only?

Data measurement techniques and data variables are necessary to successfully carry out a business process improvement activity. This only holds true for existing business processes. The activity ideally begins by studying the existing business process and its various elements. This is done by a procedure called process mapping. The business processes are carefully looked into to find areas of improvement, which can later be implemented.

What benefits do we get from a Business Process Improvement?

As an example, let us look at Company A. It is a company that produces consumer goods to be used by its customers. The daily demand for a particular product has continually been 2,000 units a day. However, they are only able to produce 1,000 units of that product. A Business Process Improvement activity is thus necessary to help the company find ways as to how they can improve their processes so that they are able to meet the demand of 2,000 units daily.

Business Process Improvement sounds easy, is it really easy to implement?

For a person who understands his business processes deeply, this would not be a difficult thing to achieve. One critical thing that professionals would need to establish in their minds is that for business process improvement, you need to be open to change. There may be chances that your processes could be completely overhauled which may not go down well with some of the employees of the company. You would need to ensure that all the employees directly affected by the business process improvement measure are taken into confidence before the improvement measures are implemented.

There are plenty of methods available for professionals involved in a Business Process Improvement to help them optimize business processes. These include Total Quality Management, Kaizen and Six Sigma.

Business process improvement - It is all about team work. Effective business process improvement measures have failed because teams have not contributed to its success.
