Credit Cards A Costly Convenience For Some Consumers
By: Nick Makaryk

For numerous reasons that people know well the most convenient form of payment is a credit card. The worst part is that most do not realize that these are an expensive form of payment.

There are hidden fees that the credit card companies charge that this article will bring your attention to. You can pay hundreds of dollars a year as they tiny sums add up while you aren't paying attention. These can be avoided and you can save money instead of spending it if you are aware of these fees.

Ever decreasing grace periods are one of those hidden cost. A grace period of sorts was something people used to enjoy when there was a delay from the time interest was charged by the bank after the use of the money on the card. There was no interest charged on the loan if the card was paid off before the grace period was up. This was usually a time frame of thirty days.

Things are different now. The grace period has been cut down to only twenty or twenty-five days by several banks. You are not even aware of the interest that you are paying if you are not aware of the change and are still relying on the grace period of thirty days. Some banks don't allow any grace period any more making things worse. This means that interest begins to accumulate the minute you purchase something.

To determine the length of the grace period you should look at the paper work with the credit card. You should consider canceling your credit card and finding one that allows for better terms of credit if this time is not long enough.

Another subtle drainer of your money is the late fees. How much the credit card company charges in these cases is important to know. You will be surprised at how much you are spending without knowing if you combine high fees with a shortened grace period.

The same day that the bill for the credit card is gotten you should send the check or make an electronic money transfer. If you don't you could end up paying a great deal in late fees. You will look like a borrowing risk to other lenders when delays appear on the credit report. The fact that the credit card company is within their rights to increase the amount of interest charged if even one payment is late is the strongest reason. It does not matter who lent the amount any lender can do this for a late payment. The credit card company can raise the rates if the and when this appears on the credit report.

Paying attention to the fees should not be hard. You will be amazed at the total at the end of the year if you keep records of the money saved through this method patiently.
