DVD Copying Not As Ordinary As Once Upon Time Deliberated
By: Isaiah Henry

A recently released study, by the NPD Group revealed: approximately 2% of people, who own a computer and have internet access ever engage in DVD ripping. Its a surprising statistic, given the fact that ripping software, like Isofter and many others is widely available. Many steer clear of the practice because they fear it is illegal. In fact, ripping DVDs is only illegal when done so with the intent of resale.

Fear of losing huge amounts of money is widespread in the movie industry due, in large part, to the losses the music industry has suffered. Music is not being ripped and sold however; it is being shared via peer-to-peer file sharing sites which you can find all over the internet. It is true music executives report lost profit revenues in the Billions of dollars, but that is because sites like Kaza and Limewire ( along with many others) are allowed to operate legally at the present time. No such site exists where peers can share movies.

The study uncovered the two main reasons that people are not ripping DVDs on a wide scale: 1. Many think it is a time-consuming process and 2. Some are worried about the DRM measures recently put in place. With regard to the time issue, Russ Crupnick, Senior Analyst for the NPD Group, states In my brief experimentation with these applications they seem to work fine. It seems to come down to consumers saying If I cant have the ripping completed in a minute, Im not doing to do it al all. In a culture that demands instant everything you can even get fast food handed to you through a window as you drive by its not surprising many are concerned about wasting time. The fact of the matter is, though, from start to finish, the DVD ripping process takes no longer than 15 minutes. The estimated fifteen minutes is provided the computer owner has a decent (fast) internet connection, the necessary software and equipment on hand.

Senior Analyst for the NPD Group, Mr. Russ Crupnick revealed there are two major reasons the general public is not participating in DVD ripping in massive numbers. First, many people think the process is very time-consuming. Secondly, many others are fearful (because they do not understand the measures recently introduced by the DRM (Management of Digital Rights). It is not surprising people who want fast food, immediate weight loss and instant gratification dont want to take part in a time-consuming process. The fact of the matter is that DVD ripping can be completed start to finish in about fifteen minutes. The fifteen minute estimate applies to computer users who have relatively fast internet connections and the appropriate software and equipment on hand.

DVD Ripping software and equipment has been available for awhile now and people have not stormed computer stores around the globe to buy any of it. It is unlikely that this trend will change anytime soon.
