I have to admit, I have always been a little snarky and judgemental about flip flops. I thought that they were just flimsy rubber sandals that wore out within the season, making them tacky and a waste of time. What I didn't realize is that, like all clothing, there is quite the variety available, and they aren't all cheap either. In fact, you can get designer flip flops that actually look sexy. Sexy flips flops, well, that was a new one for me. I've also seen some really lovely jewelry embellished flip flops that were super cute and much more appropriate for evening wear than I would have thought. Depending on your style, you can wear flip flops for almost any occasion. I even know of people who have gotten married in thong sandals. My friend Amy had white flip flops with little jeweled charms attached that she wore for her reception. She said that a wedding in heels was enough, she was bound and determined to spend the rest of her wedding experience as comfortable as possible while still looking charming and cute. I have to say, she totally rocked those embellished flip flops. If there can be bridal flip flops that don't look tacky, well I'd say we're talking about a pretty versatile shoe, wouldn't you? Of course, this is hardly a surprise. Flip flops have been used in different cultures for centuries. The Indian chappal and the Japanese zori are both flip flop style sandals that are long standing parts of these cultures. A fun fact about the chappal is that they are commonly used to indicate aggression or frustration during an argument. The wearer simply whips them off his or her feet and gestures with them in the heat of the argument. Amusingly, it is not unknown for the chappals to actually be thrown or used to hit one's opponent in such a situation; not that I'm condoning this, I'm just humored by it. The earliest depictions of flip flop type shoes is in ancient Egyptian art, which lets us know that these may have been invented so early as to have been the second style of shoe (after the moccasin) ever made! Today, you will find them all over the place, from the glamorous feet of Hollywood celebrities to the hard-working feet of military servicemen in the shower. These are just two examples of how far and wide the use of these shoes are, and how useful they can actually be- anything that increases the sanitation standards for soldiers AND get used by the rich and famous, well, those are some pretty unique sandals!
