Effective Web Site Design Tips

1) Never use splash pages

Splash pages are the pages that comes out first before you see the index page of a website. It usually very attractive image with words like “welcome” or “click here to enter”. Sometimes it is an advertisement, in fact they are just that pretty vases with no definite purpose but gather traffic. Most of the time this is the reason why your visitors clicked the back button! Give them a purpose to stay and go back to your site without the splash page.

2) Avoid using excessive banner advertisements

Even the least net savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner advertisements so you will be wasting valuable website real estate. Instead, provide more valuable content and weave relevant affiliate links into your content, get the interest of the visitors by show what are really interesting and the benefits of your site then let your them feel that they want to buy instead of being pushed to buy.

3) Have a simple and clear navigation

You need to have a simple and visible navigation menu so that even a young child will know how to use it. Your site should be user-friendly avoid using complicated Flash based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. If your visitors get lost and don’t know how to navigate your site, they will get pissed off and go to other site.

4) Provide clear indication of where the user is

When visitors are really interested of browsing your site, you will want to make sure they know which part of the site they are in at that moment. By doing this, you already having their interest, you are putting your visitors to stay longer and browse relevant information or navigate into any section of the site easily. Never confuse your visitors because confusion leads to leaving your site!

5) Do not use audio on your site

If your visitor is going to stay a long time at your site to read your content, you will want to make it sure they are not be disturb by some audio or even vivid colors you provide on your website. If the audio is important to you, just make it sure you provide some controls over it.
