How to Set Your Personal Goals
By: Cassidy Williams

By now, you might have gotten an idea what your dreams and your visions are all about. As such, you need to break them down into manageable steps so that you can easily achieve your dream. By sitting down and clarifying your personal goals, you will spend time and effort in order for you to make sure that your goals will help you achieve your dream. Don't worry though, even if this process takes up time and energy, it is truly necessary if you were to become successful. Think of it as an investment that will yield important assets in the short-term and in the long-term.

The personal goals that you set should be measurable and achievable. "Impossible" is a very relative term but you should also have an idea of what is workable during your lifetime and what is plain fantasy. The goals that you set should not be piecemeal and easily achievable. Of what use is a goal that can be easily achieved? They should be challenging! This way, you can exert efforts in fulfilling them and you will grow in the process.

In addition to this, you don't just set goals for the sake of setting them. You need to take into account several things. For one, your goals should be a natural expression of your identity and the kind of person you want to be. Likewise, your values should not be contrary to the goals that you set. If you do, then it will only create an internal conflict in you and your own spiritual and mental health will suffer as a result.

In setting your goals, you might need to spend sometime trying to understand what it is really that you want in life. Out of that realization, you then have to take a look at yourself - your identity, your worldview, your set of values, and the things that you enjoy doing in life. Remember not to act in compulsion. It is true that helping other people is good. But make sure that if you do, you are really doing that out of the kindness of your heart and not because of the possible social rewards that you will get. Sure receiving rewards is good but if that is your main goal, then it becomes hollow and shallow.

By taking a careful stock of the things you want to achieve, you are plotting the path that your life will take and that will give you a sense of purpose in life.
