Have you ever stopped to think about the twists and turns your life makes? Lately, I have been reflecting more on this, I believe it is because my youngest is going to college and I am getting close to a milestone birthday. When I attended college I had such big plans to make huge differences in our social service system through my profession as a social worker. I fear I have become part of the system after twenty five years and now I count the years and months to get retired.
My oldest son is following in his father's footsteps and has joined the army. My youngest one wants to get a degree in business. He has been preparing for business school admission during the past year. Neither my husband nor I have been able to help him because we do not have any background in business. My brother-in-law has been very successful in the insurance business and so he has offered to help our son with the business school admission. Since this is a very competitive area and we are finding that it is one of those situations that who you know may have a great impact on being admitted.
Within one hundred miles from our home there are several colleges and universities. Two of them are recognized for their school of business. Our son feels it is really important to have his degree from one of the top ranked schools in such a competitive field. He got this information from his guidance counselor and my brother-in-law has the same opinion. The business school admission is a difficult process which I do not fully understand. Until he completes his general education classes, my son will not be in the business school. The grades he gets in his general education classes plus the recommendations from professors will help him get into the business school.
If students receive their general education at the same university, a priority is given to them. So even though the cost of tuition for the general education classes is higher at this school than the university close to our home, he has decided that he has to go there. I heard a lot of stories about credits not transferring from one university to another, so I am in agreement that he should obtain his entire education from one school. My husband and will only have to put off our retirement for a couple more years to help him pay for the cost of his education. Perhaps if he well succeeds he will support us in our retirement.
