Before we discuss anything about EMC Shield (which is the short form of Electromagnetic compatibility), let us understand what Electromagnetic compatibility stands for. Electromagnetic compatibility is that branch of physics which is involved in the study of unintentional generation, propagation and reception of electromagnetic energy and the unwanted effects of such energy (which is known as Electromagnetic Interference or EMI) produce. Study of EMC is to provide help to operate correctly different equipments using electromagnetic energy within the same electromagnetic environment and to avoid in production of any interference effects because of their operation together. EMC shields are used in shielding any equipment or human being from receiving airborne EMI, by limiting the flow of electromagnetic fields by separating them with a barrier which is generally made of conductive material. EMC filters could be manufactured from acrylic material by embedding metal mesh inside it. Generally, stainless steel is used for most shielding application. Infrared filters are used to allow only infrared light to pass through by blocking visible light. These filters are extensively used in infrared photography and for those applications which require infrared light for their operation. These applications could be remote controls, security system, presence sensing devices, proximity sensors, and scanners. These filters are made from broad band acrylic material which has been specifically formulated to transmit only infra red light radiation. By eliminating the visible spectrum of light, it ensures increased signal to noise ratio for electronic equipments and thus improves the effectiveness of the system. These filters are available for different cutoff wavelength measured in nm. These cutoffs could be 630 nm, 665nm, 715nm, 780nm, 830nm, 850nm, and 1000nm. If a 1000nm filter is held up before a bright light, it would appear to be completely opaque and dark. Infrared Filter have different industrial applications besides in infrared photography. In many manufacturing processes, infrared filters are used to see through objects which are not visible to naked eye under normal lighting, for water detection and low light detection. Water as well as other liquids absorbs specific wavelengths of light. Therefore, by using infrared filters it would be possible for an automated system to detect whether a container is filled or not. Infrared filters could be used for night time surveillance by security personnel as well by wild life enthusiasists. Another application of infrared red filter is baby monitoring. Using infrared light source, parents could watch their baby in complete darkness without switching on light. There are many more applications of EMC shield and infrared filters in everyday life and they continue to increase.
