It is not uncommon for there to be a computer or multiple computers in a household. In this day and age computers are more common than the common cold. Computers are meant to be used to store data. This data can be saved and deleted at the user’s aspiration.
Purchasing a new computer can seem like a headache and at times can be. Before you rush out to purchase a new computer you should know what you will need to look for.
Purchasing a Processor
The choice of processor is up to you and should be determined by the amount of power you will need. Most processors will be sufficient enough for basic office use and will be able to access e-mails and internet. If you would like to have a faster processor you will look to spend more money. If you are using your computer for memory and applications such as photos and graphics, you will want a faster processor.
A good processor is an Intel Duo Core Processor.
Memory or RAM
Having a decent amount of RAM in your computer will increase performance. RAM is measured by megabytes. Having a large amount of RAM will help your computer run faster and help with multiple applications being used at any given time.
The recommended amount of RAM for a computer would be approximately 512 MB.
Hard Disk Drive
Most hard disk drives provide at least 40GB space. This is generally enough for most tasks. However, if you want to work with graphics, music or large databases you should purchase a minimum of 60GB and have it installed. An 80GB HDD would be ideal. 7200-rpm drives give optimum performance whereas 8MB of cache would make it boost performance.
Optical Drives
If you have no intention on viewing DVD movies on your computer, then a CD-RW drive should do the job. Each CD-RW drive has three speeds mentioned for it – recordable speed, rewritable speed and read speed. The minimum your drive should have is 40x recordable speeds, 12x rewritable speed and 40x read speed. There should be at least a 2MB buffer for CD-RW drives.
Monitor
When you purchase you new monitor you have choices of everything, including how big your monitor may be. The size of the monitor is up to you and will depend on what you will be using it for. If you are using this new computer for graphics you may want a larger monitor so that you can see what you are working on. Then again, if you just want a large monitor and you can afford it then get it, the bigger the better, they are really pretty neat.
