Skin Care's Big Three Products
By: Karen Hill

Beginning with the best skin care routine can be confusing considering all of the product options, home remedies and medical options. Depending on your situation, any number of products might be a good choice (each of which is suitable for its own article at the very least). The information here is aimed at those who are just getting started with a daily skin care approach and will focus on the three main components of which any skin care regimen should be built. The products I'm talking about here are skin cleanser, skin toner and moisturizers.

Skin Cleanser

Skin care treatments are available for every skin color and condition you can think of and it's very easy to get lost in this "amazing product" or that "amazing ingredient". One thing that will remain consistent regardless of your unique circumstances is that a good cleanser is a must. These products are your first tool in clearing your skin and pores and preparing it for a deep cleaning which is the next step. Keep in mind that not all skin cleansers are equally effective, especially when you start to consider skin type. A heavy cream cleanser is not going to be a good idea if your skin is oily. A clay based cleanser may make dry skin even more dry since they can remove the skin's oil and hydration. An excellent skin cleanser will cleanse the skin without introducing imbalances.

Toners

Toner is also known as astringent. The point of using skin toner is to clear the skin more aggressively and helping to remove dead cells, makeup and debris that couldn't be effectively removed by your cleanser. Having a good skin toner in your skin care regimen can help you avoid breakouts and open up the skin so that it is better prepared to utilize moisturizer. Something to remember however is that these products can be harsher on the skin than a cleanser. They also have the potential to make the skin dry and to irritate those who have sensitive skin. Choosing a skin care product is free from alcohol here is especially important, especially for dry skin treatment or skin that easily irritates.

Using Moisturizers

The third pillar of our three prong of any skin careregimen is a good moisturizer. The best of the skin moisturizers contain emollients, antioxidants, nutrients and oils. Similar to skin cleansers and skin toner, moisturizer should always be chosen for your individual skin type. Moisturizers are usually categorized by weight with the lightweight products usually containing less oil and elements that can feel "heavy" on the skin. As mentioned above a heavy moisturizer, which is great for those with dry skin, is probably not wise to use on an oily skin surface since this may simply aggravate the problem.

And there you have it, the three must have products for any good skin care program. Considering skin aging and whether or not you are having to manage certain skin conditions, other treatment options may be necessary. If this is the case, be sure to talk with a dermatologist before using any skincare products.
