Traffic Tickets

There must be very few motorists that have not had a cop stop them and give them a traffic ticket. A traffic ticket is basically a citation that is given by cops to motorists who have violated traffic laws. Furthermore, you may be given a traffic ticket that pertains to either moving violations or non-moving traffic tickets. Moving violations are generally given when motorists drive at speeds over the legal speed limit, and non-moving traffic tickets are those given when motorists fail to park their vehicles properly.

Once you receive a traffic ticket, your case is generally heard in a traffic court where the degree of punishment is decided by a magistrate. This can include paying fines and having notations, or “points”, made on your driving license or even having your driving license revoked. This occurs only in cases of extreme violations of the traffic laws. However, in most cases, traffic tickets, by and large are notifications of having committed minor violations of the traffic laws and thus generally involve no more than having to pay a fine and having to appear in a court of law.

However, even if you do receive a traffic ticket, it is not the end of the world as far as your driving is concerned; there many ways to fight them. Even if you are only accused of speeding between one and ten miles per hour over the speed limit can such a conviction have serious consequences on your operating priviledges and insurance rates.

If you are living in the United States, the traffic laws are applicable at the municipal, county, and state level. If the infraction is minor, it is just deemed as being a civil infraction in which non-moving violations, defective and even unauthorized vehicle equipment are included.

However, if you violate the traffic laws in a more serious manner, then you may even face criminal liability, and you may be treated as being guilty of felony or a misdemeanor (in this case, you will be considered as having made multiple violations of the law and will face more serious sentencing).

Furthermore, every state in the U.S. has a state Department of Motor Vehicles database of motorists, where names of those who have committed traffic violations are included. If you get a traffic ticket you can choose to plead guilty or not guilty of the offense. According to figures on traffic violations, it has been found that thirty percent of all U.S. motorists will receive a traffic ticket at least once in a year.
