Travel is challenging regardless of where you go and what you do, although the size of the challenge differs greatly. There is the whole "fit all my liquids into three ounce containers that fit into one quart sized bag" challenge is much different than the "get this toddler through airport security, onto a plane and then endure a six hour flight sitting next to them" challenge. There is nothing you can do about TSA and airline security, but there are things you can do the make traveling with kids a more pleasant experience for everyone involved. In fact, these three items are probably in the top five of what to bring along: a stuffed animal traveling buddy, a travel stroller, and a baby travel bed. The stuffed animal as travel companion works wonders for small children. Before your trip, allow them to pick out one of their stuffed animals- preferably a reasonably small one- to accompany them on the trip. Encourage them to pick a different animal than their favorite; you can tell them anything you like, but the real reason is that if, for any reason the toy is lost, you really don't want it to be their very favorite. Now, create a story around the animal's trip- let your child take pictures of your animals at different locations- this further invests your child in the trip you are taking. It also becomes a comforting presence and something to play with if they get bored. Having the stuffed animal around may also make bedtime a little easier, if you're lucky, anyway. Travel strollers save the day more often than you might realize. If you are going on a family vacation with the kids, bringing the stroller is a must. No matter how excited they start out in the morning, after a few hours of running around in the post-food sleepy stage, they will inevitably tire out, and usually before you're anywhere near being back where you're staying. Of course, they also tend to be pretty handy during the transportation stage of travel. Imagine being able to have your kids in their stroller up until it was time to board the plane and then simply folding the stroller up and placing it in the overhead bin. Pretty handy! Travel cribs are similarly wonderful in that they fold down easily into a size that can be stashed away during the day if space is limited. They also travel well, meaning that if you're spending the day at the beach or somewhere outside, you have the option of bringing a napping or resting space for you child along with you. If you're planning for outdoor use, look for a travel bed that offers UV protective screens for exactly such an occasion. Having a travel crib will also open up your options on where you can stay, as you no longer need to worry about finding a place with appropriate accommodations. All in all, these three items make a pretty killer combo when it comes to traveling convenience. You might just find yourself taking an extra vacation once you realize just how easy traveling with kids can be.
