Traveling has a long tradition and our societal wanderlust gives us an opportunity to revitalize ourselves by experiencing the world. Unfortunately, the cost of traveling is up and it appears it will continue an upward trend. There are many factors contributing to the situation, but two stand out. The cost of fuel is on the rise and few expect it to come down as oil demand grows while supplies diminish. The following dollar is also a killer for those using the currency. So, are there any ways we can deal with the increased cost of traveling? There are always little things you can do and, in this case, some big ones as well. The key in many cases is to think beyond the normal travel strategies. If you travel abroad, you already know what you biggest expense is. Flying from here to there takes a lot of fuel and airlines are under a lot of pressure. Flights are going to become more expensive, so we need strategies to deal with them. The first strategy is pretty well known. You should fly during the off season to your destination. The prices between high and low seasons are dramatically different. Flying to Paris in July is going to be expensive unless you think out of the box. Ah, but what if you just have to go during the high season? Are there any options. One is to fly something called a charter flight. These are part time airlines that operate during high seasons. They are no frills flights, but pretty cheap. What if you are really looking for a cheap flight? The only real answer is to fly air courier. Yes, these really exist. Flights are rarely free, but they can be had for $100 or so. Look up the Air Courier Association for more information. You can also save money on the personal front. In short, we are talking about seriously roughing it. Despite the horror movies of the same name, Hostels are generally safe and a tremendously good deal. Follow the backpackers to find them. Travelers should avoid the tourist traps and get immerse themselves in the local culture. One way to do this and save a ton of money is to rent a room in a home. You can usually find rooms at the train station and they are cheap. This list could actually go on and on. Traveling does not have to be that expensive, even now. Take the time to review your situation and see where you can cut corners on your cost.
