The Sony PSP is not just a cool gaming platform but a handy portable media player as well. I love that I am able to watch movies like “The Da Vinci Code” and “Open Season” while taking a long and boring bus ride or waiting at the doctor’s office. The only drawback is the PSP’s reliance on UMD videos that you cannot even play on your DVD. Yes, you could buy an accessory that will let you output the video to your TV, but there is an alternative and less expensive option. You can use a video converter on the movies you already have to change them into a format that can be viewed on your PSP. The Sony PSP can play computer video files that are encoded in the MP4 format. This is actually the same format used by videos available for download from the iTunes store. However, you might not be able to get videos downloaded from iTunes to run on your PSP even if both devices can play MP4 files. This may not be a media format issue, but may possibly be caused by DRM or Digital Rights Management over the iTunes files. Otherwise, any MP4 video file should work on a Sony PSP, so you should be able to watch a movie in this format if you download it to a PSP memory card. Therefore, if you convert your videos to the MP4 encoding, you should be able to download and watch them on your PSP. The next step is to find a program that can convert your videos. Now, the problem with video converters is that they have to deal with an overwhelming variety of media encodes and formats. I have yet to see a video converter that will perfectly convert every kind of video format into a PSP compatible video file. However, there are still applications of this type that are worth checking out, notably the PSP Video 9 converter. The main caveat I have over this program is that the last release was back in 2005. That’s a long time to go without an update. You should also know that not every video converted by the program may play successfully on the PSP. Nevertheless, this video converter is a free download, after all, and it is well-liked by PSP users--I would even say it is the most popular free video converter for the PSP. It is at least worth trying out. The PSP Video 9 converter is available as a free download from pspvideo9com. The latest version of the utility is 1.74 as of this time. The website gives clear and friendly instructions on how to install and use the video converter. Download it, and you should be watching your videos on the PSP in no time.
